If you need to take bits off your Smart, you’ll be needing Torx screwdrivers in many different sizes because they’re used throughout. This would include changing the lower set of plugs (because twin spark) because the bumper and the bar behind it have to come off and they’re held on by dozens (well, quite a lot) of Torx fastenings.

Mine uses a combination of torx and hex head, but for the most part only two sizes of each. It’s pretty convenient, if a 10mm socket doesn’t remove your part a 13mm will do it.

So, replace torx bits with hext bolts?

If you get deep inside the engines you’ll also find external torx.

Hopefully I’ll never have to do that.

Taking apart an iMac also involves lots of Torx in lots of different sizes. I have a whole set of Torx from T3 to T30. I like to use a tackle box like these as I take screws out to keep them organized by size. If I’m using interchangeable bits I’ll just put the Torx bit in the compartment with whatever size screws match it.

A lot of smart owners in the US replace the torx bolts with Phillips equivalents. The Torx bolts have a tendency to rust, anyway.

I take it a step further and I’ve replaced every plastic rivet with zip ties.

That seems a bit... counter intuitive? If they rust, sure you should replace them. But in my experience a Torx head is much less likely to wear than a Phillips head, assuming the same metal quality.
